THE *SUPER EFFECTIVE!* APPROACH OF ROSE AND LION LEADERSHIP
In the Rose and Lion Leadership program, we intentionally combine approaches to appeal to all types of learners.
We believe children can be changemakers – right now.
Children study changemakers. They learn somebody else did something. But how do you become a changemaker? How do you do it yourself? Especially when you’re a child?
As part of the full Rose and Lion Leadership program, we teach a child to lead a project. We provide the support and guidance to conceptualize and execute what is needed to complete the project. We take them step-by-step – thus they learn how to become a changemaker right now.
Plus they’re learning to develop the “soft skills” you need to become an effective leader and contributor to the greater good: curiosity, inclusiveness, forgiveness, self-empowerment, perseverance, compassion and courage.
These soft skills wrap around the traditional skills, such as creating a vision, developing a plan and executing tasks.
We believe in holistic learning, meaning we engage the brain, body and heart.
Holistic learning enables someone to take in and retain what they are learning.
We use implicit and explicit learning approaches, while prioritizing implicit learning about leadership characteristics because it is simple for children to learn this way. We combine story with practice to offer each child options that appeal to their natural learning preferences. And we offer these experiences to children at the optimal learning age.
We believe children have innate wisdom.
We tap into the innate wisdom children already have – by asking children to use their intuition and listen to their body.
Often, our bodies and hearts tell us truths that don’t always match up with societal conditioning. Unfortunately, we’re sometimes taught to ignore our instincts and break the connection with our inner compass. In Rose and Lion Leadership, we explore listening to the heart and body.
For example, we may ask “how does [quality] feel in your body?”, “where do you feel [quality] in your body?”, “what are you noticing?” and “what do you innately know to be true?”.
This helps take a 2-dimensional concept and make it 3-dimensional – getting to embodied learning. And it strengthens connection to intuition.
Our goal is to help children become balanced leaders.
The “soft skills” of leadership – the ability to set a vision, encourage collaboration, listen, coach and make decisions – are critical skills later in life. But how do you acquire these skills when you are young?
Much of the training in education, sports or workforce development emphasizes technical skills. The social and emotional skills that are essential for strong leadership are potentially acquired in a haphazard way, and the child learns is dependent on what they are exposed to. In Rose and Lion Leadership, we deliberately emphasize the “soft skills” necessary for strong leadership. (For an interesting study about the top 10 skills of a successful manager, read about Google’s Project Oxygen – a manager’s technical skills ranked #8 on the list of top 10 skills).
By focusing on curiosity, compassion, self-empowerment, forgiveness, perseverance, inclusiveness and courage, we highlight key competencies that can be used in all areas of life, and particularly in leadership positions.
